Setting yourself up for success by creating the right type of goal(s) can be key to helping you stay motivated and on track to achieving your goal(s).
Goal setting is the process of establishing an outcome (a goal) to serve as the aim of one's actions (Locke & Latham, 2020).
Why is it important to set goals?
- Increases your motivation and achievement levels
- Works best if they are specific and require a moderate amount of challenge
- Enables you to set a direction for your learning
- Works best if they are co-constructed
When you set your own goals, it helps you take ownership and more responsibility for the progress towards them.
Goal setting planning templates or worksheets are useful to establish and set goals.
Strategies and tools for goal setting
- Revisit your goals regularly so they remain relevant
- Set personal best goals rather than competitive goals
- Work with others of similar ability or outlook to develop a common goal
- Regularly evaluate and monitor your progress – using a scale can help track your progress towards achieving your goal(s)
